Using Acrylic Blocks To Bring In The Light, Basement Bath Design idea

One of the issues when doing a basement makeover is light.  Since basements are typically below grade, natural light is often hard to come by. However many basements have at least one side that opens to the outside and our basement bath was in need of natural light. One of the ways to accomplish this was the use of an acrylic block door insert.

The bath faces the west and light comes in through a sliding glass door late in the afternoon.  We contacted U.S. Block windows to see what it would recommended for a 32″ interior door.  A Hy-Lite door insert measuring 2 feet x 6 feet was recommended. The acrylic blocks would provide privacy, but also allow the late afternoon light to filter into the otherwise dark corner where the bath was located.  Had the room abutted an exterior wall we could have used acrylic blocks in a variety of window choices.  We used a solid door from Lowe’s with hardware to match Kohler’s satin nickel finish on the bathroom fixtures.

The installation of the acrylic block insert was straight forward. We merely created an opening in the door the same size as the insert’s inner frame and placed the door on top of the block insert and reattached the block frames removable side which locked the block insert into place.  Voila,  we now had a unique door for our bath that was not only beautiful but functional as well.
