What is kickout flashing?

Q: What is kickout flashing?

A: On a roof, kickout flash-ing is installed where a lower roofline intersects a vertical wall. This angled piece of flashing “kicks out” the water runoff directly into the gutter and away from the adjacent wall to prevent mold and wood rot. The flashing piece is less than a foot square piece of metal or plastic. If fabricated on site, the seams should be welded, but prefabricated kickout flashing is available for purchase. Installation of kickout flashing is considered a best practice in roof construction and is a requirement in some building codes.
