Use House Wrap on a Shed

Q: I just built an 8-by-10-foot shed and sheathed it with 1/2-inch CD. I’m going to side it with vinyl. Do I need to put up any type of water barrier before I install the siding, or can I just go ahead and do it?

A: Use a house wrap like Tyvek around the whole structure before you install the siding. Start at the bottom and go up, overlapping the layers by 4 inches or more. You can use staples to fasten the house wrap. When you fasten the siding, don’t drive the nails all the way home—leave some room between the nail head and the siding, so the panel can “float” when temperature changes cause the siding to expand and contract.
