Troubleshoot Automatic Garage Door Opener

Q.  What’s wrong with my garage door opener? The automatic opener was installed by the previous owner. It worked fine for a couple of weeks, then the door quit shutting all the way, returns to the “open” position, and the motor starts flashing lights.

A.  The culprit could be a variety of problems, but the flashing lights are a common diagnostic feature used by several manufacturers of garage door openers. If the previous homeowner left behind a manual, refer to the troubleshooting section; the specific number of flashes is usually indicative of the problem. For example, one flash could indicate that a certain wire is misaligned. Six flashes could indicate that the motor circuit has failed. If you don’t have a manual, contact the manufacturer regarding the flash code. Some manufacturers even have the flash code posted online to help pinpoint the problem.
