Stripped Nuts–What do you do?

Q: When trying to replace a toilet, I stripped the nut that bolts the toilet to the flange. How do I get this off?

A: First, give the nut and bolt a generous squirt with some penetrating oil and allow it a couple of minutes to penetrate any corrosion that may be seizing the threads. If that doesn’t loosen it enough to spin off with pliers, then find yourself a mini hacksaw. Use a towel or tape to protect the porcelain toilet base and saw a vertical cut in the nut at a slight angle until you’ve created a fairly deep groove. Insert a flat-head screwdriver into the groove and twist it to break the nut.
