Replacing a Towel Rack

Q: My kids have torn a towel rack off the bathroom wall twice. The mounts are not located over wall studs, so I’ve been using toggle bolts to fasten the rack, but do you have a stronger recommendation?

A: You might consider fastening a hardwood board roughly the size of your towel rack into the wall studs at the location where you want to hang the rack. Then, screw the mounts securely onto the hardwood rather than into the drywall.

The hardwood board can be routed with a decorative edge, stained or painted to your preference.
