Removing Veneer From Furniture

Q: I’d like to strip the veneer off a piece of furniture to refinish it. What’s the best method for removal?

A: Soak a towel with a mixture of equal parts water and vinegar. Place it on the furniture surface to saturate the veneer. Allow it to soak overnight, keeping the towel wet. The soaking should release the adhesive, and in the morning you should be able to peel up the veneer easily with a putty knife or chisel.
