Remove Old Glazing from a Window

Q: Is there an easy way to remove old glazing from a window? I’m afraid I’ll break the glass if I chip away at the glazing with a putty knife.

A: The safest way to remove old glazing is to first apply heat to soften the material. Use a heat gun to direct heat evenly over the glazing bead. Keep the heat source in motion, though, because if you warm the glass too long in one spot, it could crack. As the glazing softens, use your putty knife to scrape rather than chip the material to remove it.
