Q: I’d like to paint a basement floor, but the concrete is too rough. Is there an easy way to smooth it out?
A: You can top it with a new surface prior to painting. An overlay compound—also called a self-leveling compound—is a gypsum-based product that levels itself when poured over the floor. It can be poured up to a thickness of 1/2 in. or more, depending on the product. You spread the product with a squeegee. Once cured, the floor will be smooth and uniform.
