Q: I need to replace a dimmer switch. Are the switches universal?
A: Dimmer switches are rated to handle a specific maximum wattage. For example, if the dimmer needs to control five 100-watt bulbs, you’ll need a switch rated for at least 500 watts. If you’re swapping switches without changing light fixtures, then the wattage rating of new switch should be at least as high as the old one.
