How to Make Your Deck Last a Long Time

Building a deck is a big investment. Naturally, you want it to stand the test of time – not just for a few years, but for decades to come. The good news? With the right materials and a little know-how, your deck can last for 25 years or more.

Trex Decking

What’s the secret to a long-lasting deck? It starts with choosing quality materials and protecting your investment from the start. Whether you’re building a new deck or giving a facelift to an existing one, here’s what you need to know.

Seal the Substructure

Even the best deck boards can only last so long if the substructure underneath starts to fail. In moist environments, untreated wood can begin to weaken and deteriorate within just a few years. Applying flashing tape to critical components – starting with the ledger board can prevent premature deterioration.

Ledger board

This key connection point attaches the deck to the house and is especially vulnerable to moisture due to its exposure to the elements. Trex® Seal ledger tape is wide enough to cover the full surface of the ledger board and is reinforced with an aluminum liner for added strength. It creates a seamless seal over any gaps between the ledger and the substructure for optimal protection from water penetration.

To protect the rest of the substructure, apply flashing tape. Designed specifically for deck applications, Trex Protect® is a butyl-based tape designed to cover the top of joists, beams and rim joists – the parts of your deck you don’t see, but that do the heavy lifting.

Trex Protect flashing tape

By applying Trex Protect during installation, you block moisture from seeping into the wood framing, preventing rot and decay caused by damp conditions. It can also help deck screws hold longer and stronger, eliminating splitting from freeze and thaw cycles.

By installing Trex Seal and Trex Protect, you can ensure that your deck frame lasts as long as the deck boards it supports.

Choose Durable Decking

Not all decking is created equal. Wood decks, especially pressure-treated ones, typically last 10 to 20 years. If you use high-end materials like cedar, redwood, or exotic hardwoods, and take care of them properly, you might get closer to 30 years.

Composite decking

Composite decking, like Trex, takes it a step further. Made from an innovative blend of up to 95% recycled plastic film and reclaimed sawdust, Trex decking resists rotting, warping, mold and insect damage. Trex decking is also backed by warranties ranging from 25 to 50 years, adding confidence and long-term value.

Divert Water

For elevated decks, consider installing an under-deck drainage system. Using a network of troughs and funnels, these systems not only protect the joists and beams of the substructure by diverting water away from the wood they also create dry, usable space beneath the deck.

Trex RainEscape Install

For optimal flexibility and the best aesthetics, choose a system like Trex® RainEscape® that installs above the joists. This application protects the entire foundation from water penetration and also allows builders to safely and discreetly run gas and electrical lines to power lights, fans, appliances and outdoor entertaining components for a fully functional outdoor room.

Keep It Clean

Even with high-performance materials and protective products in place, your deck still needs some regular TLC. Make it a habit to sweep off dirt and leaves, wash it a couple of times a year, and clean up any spills to prevent staining. If you live in a snowy climate, be sure to gently remove snow and ice to prevent moisture buildup. If you have a wooden deck, make sure to remember to sand, seal and stain annually to prevent rot.

It’s also a good idea to inspect your deck a couple of times a year. Look for any signs of wear, water damage or shifting. Trim back nearby plants to keep air moving and moisture from lingering around the base.

A Few Smart Steps, A Lot More Years

If you want your deck to last decades – not just years – be thoughtful from the start. Invest in durable materials, protect the frame with moisture barriers and keep up with regular care. These small steps don’t just extend the life of your deck; they protect your investment and give you peace of mind.
