How to Fix a Bi-fold Door that Sticks

Q:  We installed a new carpet with a thicker pile than the old. Now we have a bi-fold door that sticks against the carpet. What’s the easiest way to fix this?

A:  First, use the pivot adjustment at the bottom of the door so the bottom clears the carpet. However, usually you will have to cut the door. With the door slightly opened, measure up 1/2 inch from the highest point on the carpet and mark the door. Then open the door completely and remove it from the brackets. Lay the door flat on a work table and mark the cutline on the rear side of the door. Clamp a cutting guide to the door, or use a very straight board as a makeshift guide, situated so the blade is aligned slightly to the outside of the line. Make the cut, and then round off the sharp cut edges of the door with sandpaper. Then replace the door and you should have ample clearance.
