DIY Q & A: How to Clean an AC Condenser Unit

AC repair

Q.  How do I clean my AC condenser unit without damaging the metal fins?

A.  Dirt and debris that clog the condenser’s coil fins can restrict air flow, causing your cooling system to waste energy. To clean the condenser, first disconnect the electrical power. Use compressed air to blow away loose debris around the unit. Unscrew and remove the top of the unit. (The fan is connected to the top, which makes it heavy.) Use a garden hose from the inside to wet the fins, spraying outward. Be careful–too much water pressure can damage the fins. Spray on an Air Conditioner Coil Foaming Cleaner, according to the manufacturer’s instructions, and allow the cleaner to penetrate the grime. Use the hose again, spraying from the inside out, to clean the debris and the cleaning agent off the coil fins. Replace the top and reconnect the power supply.
