How do I install an outlet box in a finished wall?

Q: How do I install an outlet box in a finished wall?

A: When running wire through finished walls and you can’t access a stud on which to mount the box, install a Remodel box (also called an old-work or cut-in box). Remodel boxes are plastic outlet boxes that clamp to the drywall or plaster instead of attaching to the wall framing. When inserted into the access hole, the box has “wings” that extend outward and bracket the back of the wallboard as you drive the mounting screws, creating a toggle-bolt effect that holds the box in place.
