Fix a Noisy Ceiling Fan

Q.  My ceiling fan is only 3 months old but has developed a constant rattle. I think the problem is with screws that wiggle loose around the globe. Every time I tighten them the rattle soon comes back. How do I fix this?

A.  The very nature of a ceiling fan is to rotate and thus vibrate, which can loosen the screws. To reduce the rattling, remove the light shade or “globe, and wrap a wide rubber band around the neck of the shade where the screws grip it. The rubber band will act as a shock absorber for the vibration. It also helps prevent the screws from loosening and dampens the unwanted noise.
