Adding a Stainless Steel Backsplash

Q: I’d like to add a stainless steel backsplash behind a stove, between two wall cabinets. What’s the best way to attach it without visible fasteners?

A: Ask the supplier to cut the stainless sheet to size. The edges will be sharp, so wear gloves when hand-ling it. Use a caulk gun to apply a liberal bead of heavy-duty construction adhesive (such as Liquid Nails) across the entire back of the sheet. Use a putty knife to spread it into an even coating, 1/2 inch from the edges. Attach a temporary cleat at the bottom of the backsplash to support the sheet while the glue sets. Press the sheet to the wall. Use a clean, soft cloth to firmly smooth the sheet from the center outward, pushing out air bubbles so the glue has full contact with the wall. Clean off any excess glue along the edges. Once the glue cures, remove the cleat.
