What is the Minimum Thickness for Concrete?

Q: I’d like to extend an existing concrete patio. What is the minimum thickness for concrete?

A: Concrete is typically applied at a thickness of 2 inches or more, but the thicker it is, the stronger the slab will be. Four inches is most common for a slab. The thinner applications would include drives, walkways, slabs and footers, just to name a few. With this type of application, both a fine and coarse aggregate are required. Products labeled “High Strength Concrete Mix” are ideal for these types of applications.
