How Do I Prevent Puddling on my Deck?

Q: I had a mahogany deck installed last year and the boards were put too close together, resulting in puddling when it rains or snows. How can I repair this? Can I run a router between the boards to cut a drainage area? I would like to take all the boards and respace them, but I’m not able to remove the screws and there are too many.

A: If you don’t want to take up the decking, then you can route out the boards, but then you’ll have to go back and seal them against rot when they’re dry. Maybe drill some 3/8-inch weep holes every few feet. Apply a good water sealer where you drill holes. We recommend the Armstrong-Clark products (www.armclark.com).
