Under-sink plumbing usually isn’t something you think about—until it gets in the way.

Whether you’re installing a new vanity, upgrading to a deeper kitchen sink, or adding pull-out storage, traditional tubular plumbing can take up a surprising amount of cabinet space.

Standard P-trap assemblies often sit low and forward inside the cabinet, leaving little room for organizers, cleaning supplies, or trash bins.

The new Dearborn space-saving sink drain kits are designed to solve that problem by repositioning the plumbing higher and closer to the wall, opening up valuable storage space while simplifying installation.

Why Traditional Under-Sink Plumbing Wastes Space

At the center of most sink drain assemblies is the P-trap, the curved section of pipe that holds water and prevents sewer gases from entering your home.

While effective, traditional P-traps are typically positioned low in the cabinet. When the sink drain and wall outlet don’t line up perfectly—something that happens frequently—installers often end up assembling a patchwork of extensions, elbows, and cut-to-fit pieces to make everything connect.

The result can be a bulky drain layout that:

  • Consumes valuable cabinet space
  • Interferes with drawers or roll-out organizers
  • Requires cutting and dry-fitting multiple parts
  • Introduces extra joints that increase potential leak points

Many DIYers try to work around these problems with flexible accordion-style traps, but those products are often not code-compliant and prone to failure.

Space-saving drain kits take a different approach by redesigning the layout of the entire assembly.

What Makes Space-Saving Drain Kits Different

Instead of piecing together multiple tubular components, space-saving kits provide a coordinated system that keeps plumbing high and tight to the back wall.

The biggest differences from traditional tubular setups include:

  • Repositioned P-Trap: The trap sits closer to the wall outlet, freeing up space in the center of the cabinet.
  • Telescoping Adjustment: Adjustable arms allow both horizontal and vertical movement, making it easy to align the drain without cutting the pipe.
  • Complete Pre-Kitted System: All necessary components are included in a single kit, with no additional elbows or extensions required.
  • Rigid, Code-Compliant Design: Unlike flexible traps, these kits maintain a rigid tubular construction for durability and code compliance.

Once installed, the plumbing is tucked neatly against the back wall, rather than projecting into the cabinet. That leaves more room for storage systems, trash bins, or cleaning supplies.

Dearborn Space-saving drain kits are available for both kitchen and bathroom installations, including:

  • Single-bowl bathroom sink kits (1-1/2″ with optional reducer for 1-1/4″)
  • Single-bowl kitchen sink kits
  • Double-bowl kitchen sink kits
  • Double-bowl kitchen kits with garbage disposal connection

Kitchen versions may also include Hi-Line connections and dishwasher compatibility, depending on the kit.

Benefits of a Space-Saving Sink Drain System

  • Faster installation: Telescoping components eliminate the need for cutting and measuring. Most installations can be completed with simple adjustments.
  • Fewer parts to assemble: A complete kit reduces trips to the store and avoids cobbling together mismatched components.
  • Durable, leak-resistant construction: Rigid tubular components provide secure slip-joint connections that meet plumbing code requirements.
  • More usable cabinet storage: By moving the plumbing closer to the wall, you gain significantly more usable space beneath the sink.

Real-World Applications

In the Kitchen…

Kitchen sinks often include garbage disposals, dishwasher connections, and double bowls, which can crowd the cabinet quickly.

A space-saving P-trap helps keep the plumbing out of the way so you can store:

  • Cleaning supplies
  • Pull-out organizers
  • Trash bins or recycling containers

In the Bathroom…

Bathroom vanities typically have limited storage space. By repositioning the trap toward the wall, the cabinet interior becomes much more usable for:

  • Towels
  • Toiletries
  • Storage baskets

Ideal for remodels…

These kits are especially useful when:

  • Rough-in heights are too high
  • Cabinet space is limited
  • Drain locations are offset from the sink

Rather than modifying cabinets or opening walls, installers can simply adjust the telescoping sections to make the connection work.

How to Install a Dearborn Space-Saving Drain Kit

Installing a space-saving drain kit is similar to assembling a traditional tubular P-trap, but with fewer parts and greater flexibility for adjustments.

Step 1: Connect to the sink tailpiece.

Start at the sink drain or disposal outlet and attach the tailpiece connection.

Step 2: Install the 90-degree waste arm.

Attach the waste arm and orient it horizontally toward the wall outlet.

Step 3: Position the P-trap.

Set the trap body near the wall outlet to keep the plumbing tucked toward the back of the cabinet.

Step 4: Adjust the telescoping arm.

Extend or retract the adjustable sections until the trap aligns with the wall drain.

Step 5: Tighten slip-joint connections.

Hand-tighten the nuts and washers, then snug them slightly with pliers if necessary.

Because the components telescope, cutting pipe is usually unnecessary.

Other Installation Best Practices

Keep these best practices in mind for a trouble-free install:

  • Maintain a slight downward slope toward the wall drain.
  • Ensure washers are properly seated before tightening.
  • Avoid overtightening slip-joint nuts—compression seals do the work.
  • Keep the trap and drain assembly properly aligned to prevent stress on fittings.

Under-sink storage space is more valuable than ever in modern kitchens and bathrooms. Traditional plumbing layouts often waste that space by placing the P-trap low and forward inside the cabinet.

Space-saving sink drain kits solve that problem by raising the drain line so that the trap is closer to the wall, creating a cleaner layout and significantly improving cabinet storage.

Instead of working around bulky plumbing, homeowners and installers can now work with a system designed to maximize both function and space.
