Is there an advantage to having the voids in the boards?

Q: I’ve seen composite decking for sell as solid boards as well as boards with arched voids on the underside. Is there an advantage to having the voids in the boards?

A: The scalloped profile of some composite deck boards is generally a cost-cutting measure that enables the manufacturer to sell the material at a lower price point. The scalloped boards cost less simply because less material is required to manufacture them.
