Replacing a Door Transom

Q: When replacing a door and transom, do the replacements come as a single unit or separate pieces?

A: You should consult with your door supplier about their specific techniques. If you’re picking up the door, the manufacturer might pre-attach the transom. If you’re having it shipped, however, manufacturers often send the door and transom as two separate pieces to be assembled on site. We had to assemble the last door/transom combination that was shipped to us. We attached the transom to the door using construction adhesive and sealant along the joint, as well as screws and nailing plates bridging the joint on each side to hold the jambs together.
