Best Way to Stabilize a Toilet

Q: What’s the best way to stabilize a rocking toilet?

A: Toilets rock due to uneven floors, usually on tiled surfaces. Movement in the toilet will eventually deteriorate the wax ring, which will result in a toilet leak. Sit on the toilet to weigh it down, giving it firm contact with the floor. Use a wrench to snug down the bolts that hold the toilet to the floor. Be careful not to over-tighten, which could crack the porcelain. Slip toilet shims into any gaps between the base and floor and cut off the excess length. Toilet shims are small plastic tabs sold at hardware stores and home centers. If the shims are too tough to slice with a utility knife, then cut with a wood chisel and hammer.
