Fertilizing a Lawn

Q: When should I begin feeding my lawn for spring?

A: Fertilizing a lawn is a great way to boost the health of the root system to combat heat, cold, drought and other stresses. Plan a feeding in early spring (February to April) to strengthen the lawn’s roots for a strong start before the heavy growing season. If the lawn had crabgrass last year, apply a combination fertilizer with a pre-emergent. In late spring (April to June), the growing grass is using stored energy, which necessitates another feeding. If broadleaf weeds are growing too, then feed the lawn with a combination fertilizer with broadleaf weed control (a “weed-and-feed” product).
