Mole Problems in Your Garden?

Q: My garden has a mole problem. How do I fight back?

A: The most effective technique for getting rid of moles is to use traps, but many people are reluctant to use them for “humane” reasons. Traps come in a variety of configurations, including a choker mole trap, harpoon mole trap and scissor mole trap, all of which exterminate the pest. You can also trap moles using a live-trap from companies such as the Havahart Company, but you will then have to get rid of the live mole after you’ve trapped it. Poisons and mole repellents are also available. Most commercial mole repellents are formulated with castor oil. When using mole repellents or mole poisons, you should water the area of application so the agent will permeate the soil. Water the area thoroughly before and after application according to the instructions on the repellent or poison. More than one application may be necessary.
