What is Expansive Cement?

Q. What is expansive cement?

A. Concrete is generally mixed with more water than is needed to hydrate the cement, and when it evaporates it causes the concrete to shrink. The shrinking leads to cracking, which weakens the concrete. This shrinkage defeats the purpose of grouting applications such as grouting anchor bolts or grouting machine foundations. To address these problems, “expansive cement” refers to a cement mixture that, when mixed with water, increases in volume during the curing process to a greater degree than standard Portland cement this effect can strengthen concrete applications by eliminating the shrinkage.
