How Far Away From the House Should Water be Diverted?

Q. How far away from the house should water be diverted with a downspout?

A. Today’s building codes generally recommend that water should be diverted 10 ft. away from the house foundation. The further away the water flows, the safer the home. This can be accomplished with downspout extensions, splash blocks or downspout drains. Furthermore, make sure the slope of the ground does not fall toward the house. The slope should be graded away from the house, dropping 6 in. for every 6 ft.
