How Do I Cut Small Mosaic Tiles?

Q: How do I cut small mosaic tiles? I’m installing a backsplash and can’t fit whole tiles around the electrical outlets and switches.

A: First, determine if switch plates and outlet covers will conceal the problem area. If they will, there may be no reason to cut or install the tiles. If they must be cut, the tool required depends on the tile material. If it’s glass tile, you will need a small 4-inch wet saw, but if it’s ceramic tile, tile nippers will work. When using tile nippers, you have to cut one small sliver at a time from the waste side of the tile, gradually removing material and expanding the cut. You can’t usually nip a large area all at once without breaking the tile.
